why are parents and teachers reluctant to monitor and advise internet habits of children

Parents and teachers often suffer from a complex that they are less technically savvy than kids when it comes to internet and the online world. This prevents them from questioning children about what the child is up-to?, what is the child browsing?, who is the child chatting and mailing to?, who are the child’s online friends? etc.

But, the simple fact is, there is no need to be a rocket scientist to ask these questions or to find answers to these questions. It takes only wisdom and common sense to do this. In fact a simple step that parents and teachers can undertake is to create their own profile in orkut, facebook and myspace and check what others are talking about their children, who their online friends are etc. Steps such as these will go a long way in minimizing the risks of cyber bullying, exposure to internet predators etc.

Yes Anup, I have to completely agree to the fact that present day kids are much technically savvy than their parents but that should not stop them from parenting.
