Internet is a wonderful tool now, but giving rise to new risks and possibilities for many threats. Films, music, software and databases are protected under the Copyright Act as “literary works”.
“It’s important to remember, however, that even though piracy prevents money from reaching the movie industry, those dollars probably stay in the economy”-said by intellectual property expert.
Because of digital technology it is very easy to have a replica of original copy and can be distributed among society violating the copyright laws. The film industry is fighting with government to crack down illegal DVD factories and strengthen laws on file-sharing. Unauthorized software may contain viruses which may damage both individual computers and entire networks.
Copyright infringement hurts the copyright owners by reducing sales and even consumer face the effect of it. Every year software industry, musical industry loses millions or billions of dollars, stripping of new creative works and hurting the economic growth of a country. The losses through infringement directly affect the profit of various industries. Because of loss of money, publishers and other have fewer resources to devote to the research, writing and development of new works.
“The impact of online piracy on the US music business has been “devastating”", says the head of the Recording Industry Association of America, Cary Sherman.

Web Pirates Punished in 2006
Two major software pirates were charged with criminal copyright infringement for their involvement in the manufacture and widespread distribution of pirated software. On August 25, 2006, Danny Ferrar, owner and operator of BUYUSA.com, a massive for-profit software piracy website, was sentenced in federal court to six years in prison.
